I was fortunate enough to run away to Italy for a month this past fall. I really wanted to go to a place that was purely Italian through and through. Enter Apulia, or Puglia as it is sometimes called. I can honestly say I had never heard of this area located in the "heel of the boot" of Southern Italy. I packed my bag and took a chance....and I'm so glad I did. I ended up in a tiny town called Castellana Grotte, where even though no one... and I mean no one speaks English... I found some of the friendliest people to date. Through lots of gesturing, VERY broken English and my 10 word Italian vocabulary, I was taken out for coffees, dinners, and shown around nearby towns all by people I had never met before. Saying it was an incredible experience is an immense understatement.
