Here are some of the amazing surrounding areas to where I stayed in Castellana Grotte. Including but not limited to, beautiful cathedrals, restaurants in caves, ancient cities and Santa's remains? (Who knew?) The nearest town to Castellana is Monopoli. I short 15-20 minute drive through winding roads down to the sea. This is La basilica di Maria Santissima della Madia. I was fortunate enough to run away to Italy for a month this past fall. I really wanted to go to a place that was purely Italian through and through. Enter Apulia, or Puglia as it is sometimes called. I can honestly say I had never heard of this area located in the "heel of the boot" of Southern Italy. I packed my bag and took a chance....and I'm so glad I did. I ended up in a tiny town called Castellana Grotte, where even though no one... and I mean no one speaks English...
